HANK’s Journey Home

Humane Society of Blue Ridge - HANK

When HANK first arrived at the Humane Society of Blue Ridge on October 17, 2024, we knew he deserved a chance. What we didn’t know yet was just how many people it would take to help him finally find his home.

Day after day, month after month, HANK waited.

Shelter life can be hard on dogs, especially the ones who stay a little longer. The routines, the noise, the constant changes. But through it all, HANK kept showing us who he was. He built relationships with staff, volunteers, and everyone who took the time to slow down and know him. He became part of the daily rhythm here at HSBR.

As time went on, our team started asking the hard but important question: what else can we do for HANK?

That’s one of the things that makes animal rescue so deeply community-driven. Sometimes helping an animal means thinking outside your own walls. It means partnerships. It means transport volunteers giving up long days on the road. It means shelters working together instead of apart. It means believing that the right home may simply be somewhere else.

On January 2, 2026, after 442 days with us, HANK made the trip from the North Georgia mountains to St. Petersburg, Florida, where our friends at Pet Pal Animal Shelter welcomed him into their care.

The hope was simple: maybe a larger city would give HANK more opportunities to be seen. More people. More foot traffic. More chances for someone to stop and say, “That’s my dog.”

And eventually, someone did.

A couple months later, HANK met Shelly.

Now, instead of kennel runs and shelter schedules, HANK spends his days exploring downtown St. Pete, visiting local markets, taking road trips, and spending time with friends and family. He traded uncertainty for adventure. Waiting for belonging became living fully.

Stories like HANK’s are never about one person or one organization. They are about the village that forms around an animal who needs a chance.

The HSBR staff who cared for him every single day. The volunteers who loved him through the waiting. The transporters who got him safely to Florida. The team at Pet Pal who opened their doors and continued his journey. And finally, Shelly, who saw HANK not as “a long-term shelter dog,” but as family.

This is what rescue really looks like.

Not giving up when the first answer isn’t there. Not putting a timeline on an animal’s worth. Being willing to drive farther, collaborate harder, and keep believing that somewhere out there is the right person for each animal in our care.

For HANK, that person was waiting in St. Pete.

We are grateful for our new found partnership with Pet Pal Animal Shelter in St. Pete, FL - because of them and countless others, HANK is finally home!
