After 11 Months, YODA Found Home.
There are some dogs who come through our shelter and leave a permanent mark on everyone they meet. YODA was one of those dogs.
For 11 months, YODA called Humane Society of Blue Ridge home. He came into our care when he was still under a year old, still very much a puppy, and somehow, month after month, he kept getting overlooked. He grew up here with us. He learned the routine of shelter life, made friends with staff and volunteers, and became part of our everyday lives.
When a dog stays that long, they stop feeling like just another resident. They become family.
We watched YODA wait. We celebrated the little victories with him, the good days, the small moments of progress, the times someone would stop and show interest and we would let ourselves hope that maybe this was finally it. But the weeks turned into months, and he was still here.
Long-term shelter dogs carry a different kind of weight. You root for them harder. You worry about them more. You want so badly for someone to see what you see.
YODA was one of those dogs.
He was loved deeply by our staff, our volunteers, and by so many people in our community who followed his story. Every share, every comment, every person who stopped to ask about him reminded us that people were rooting for him too. Everyone wanted the same thing for him, a home of his own.
And then, after 11 months of waiting, it finally happened.
YODA was adopted.
The dog who had spent nearly a year growing up in our shelter walked out the front door with a family of his very own. A family ready to love him, give him stability, and give him the life he had been waiting for all along.
He even got a new name.
YODA is now KODA!
There is something incredibly special about seeing a long-term resident finally get their chance. It reminds all of us why we do this work. It reminds us that sometimes the right home takes time. Sometimes it takes far longer than we wish it would, but when it happens, every hard day, every moment of waiting, and every ounce of hope feels worth it.
KODA’s story is a reminder that no animal should be forgotten. Sometimes all it takes is one person saying yes to change everything!
To everyone who shared his story, asked about him, loved him from afar, and helped keep hope alive for him, thank you. You were part of this too!
KODA, we will forever be cheering for you!
You did it, buddy!
